Can a global corporation adopt environmental sustainability as a mission and thrive financially? Founder and Chairman of Interface, Inc., Ray Anderson did and saved his company over $300 million in waste reduction alone.
At a crucial time in their company’s life, a novel was passed up the chain of command and placed on the then-CEO’s desk. The most significant shift in the company’s history was made following a “spear in the chest” epiphany Ray Anderson experienced when he read Paul Hawken’s “The Ecology of Commerce” seeking inspiration for a speech on the company’s environmental vision in 1994.
Fourteen years and a sea change later, Interface, Inc., is nearly 50 percent up “Mount Sustainability,” the journey towards a vision that no one would have imagined for the company, or the petroleum-intensive industry of carpet manufacturing which has been forever changed by Anderson’s vision. The once captain of industry, now environmentalist, has authored a book chronicling his journey, “Mid-Course Correction,” and become an unlikely screen hero in the 2004 Canadian documentary, “The Corporation.” He’s a sought after speaker and advisor on all issues eco, including a stint as co-chairman of the President’s Council on Sustainable Development. Coined “Greenest CEO” he was named one of TIME International’s Heroes for the Environment in 2007. He presented a plenary that is now on DVD at the 2008 Bioneers Conference and is releasing his second book this September of 2009.
No one speaks to the business case for sustainability with more credibility and authority than Ray Anderson.
