Sterling Physical Therapy:

Building Green in Pella

A Healthier Choice

It comes as no surprise in a community that has been a leader in green building in Iowa that the new Sterling Physical Therapy Clinic was built to be as green as possible with current technology and cost factors. The green ethic – energy efficient, water conserving buildings full of features that stress recycled over new and renewable over time – is now firmly mainstream.

  • LEED like construction procedure. To find out more about LEED building ratings go to www.usgbc.org/leed.
  • Mike Lubberden from Central College was consulted on LEED and other green construction avenues we explored.
  • Geothermal heating and cooling system – 19 wells under the north parking lot 188ft deep take energy from the earth to heat and cool our building.
  • Energy efficient Pella windows.
  • Energy efficient electric water heater.
  • Energy efficient lighting where possible.
  • Lighting on timers.
  • Green cleaning system from Des Moines Sanitary which mixes a concentrate with water so we have the exact ratio needed.
  • Zoned heating and cooling areas – so areas of the building that are not being used can be shut down.
  • The building was engineered and pre wired to use solar power once solar becomes more efficient and cheaper to install.
  • The building was engineered and pre wired to use wind turbines once they become more efficient and cost effective.
  • Recycled carpet squares are used in the carpeted areas of the building.
  • The Clinic’s vehicle is Flex Fuel – it can operate on “normal gas” up to E85.
